GV 2016 Division 1 Men's MUGC Result

June 18, 10:30am saw the Round 1 opener for the MUGC Royals against the Monash Warriors; with a strong pre-season under their belt and confidences high, it was going to be a tough match. Up against 2015 VicBowl competitors the Monash Warriors, this was an excellent test for the boys at MUGC a great opportunity to see how pre-season form would relate. Muddy and wet conditions at the Croydon Rangers Field made for interesting game play as both teams played with a lot of heart and determination.  Click here for game statistics.

 

1st Quarter - 14-16

  • Monash Warriors began the game with an impressive first drive running the ball into the end zone and converting with a 2 point conversion. Score 0-8

  • MUGC Royals with an equally impressive first drive ran the ball in from the 2 yard line courtesy of #24 Frank Matue (sponsored by Joe Sio - USO Security Group); 2 point conversion was unsuccessful.  Score 6-8

  • MUGC Royals recovered the ball at the 15 yard line after a fumble on a handoff from the Monash Warriors trying to replicate a large gain from their first special teams play.

  • MUGC Royals were able to capitalise by running the ball in from the 1 yard line courtesy #18 Theo Sasa; 2 Point conversion was good with place holder #9 Noah Sims running the ball in for the conversion. Score 14-8

  • Monash Warriors with a long pass and reception scored a touchdown with a successful 2 point conversion run.  Score 14-16

  • MUGC Royals turned the ball over on downs giving the Warriors excellent field position going into the 2nd quarter.

 

2nd Quarter - 20-30 (6-14)

  • With gallant defence the MUGC Royals were able to force the Monash Warriors to turn the ball over on downs at the 4 yard line.

  • After the MUGC Royals punted the ball; the Monash Warriors were able to put together a good string of plays to run the ball into the end zone and also running the ball in for a 2 point conversion. Score 14-24

  • A 42 yard run from #42 Aaron Nassaris put the MUGC Royals into their red zone.

  • MUGC Royals were able to score with #1 Dylan Letoga passing to #2 Prince Coleman for the reception touchdown; the 2 point conversion was no good. Score 20-24

  • First play after kick off return the Monash Warriors threw a long pass and reception to the end zone; the 2 point conversion was no good. Score 20-30

  • After a big gain from the Monash Warriors, the MUGC Royals managed another big defensive effort by stopping the Monash Warriors in their red zone and turning the ball over on downs.

  • This brought the end of an entertaining first half with the MUGC Royals very much in touch of the Monash Warriors and pushing for an opening win.

 

3rd Quarter -  28-38 (8-8)

  • MUGC Royals started the half with the ball, however had to punt on 4th down which allowed the Monash Warriors to take the ball down the field and score a touchdown from a pass; conversion was successful with a run.  Score 20-38

  • MUGC Royals turned the ball over on downs and gave Monash Warriors excellent field position; however MUGC Royals defense held solid again preventing a score and getting the ball back on downs.

  • MUGC Royals were able to score with #1 Dylan Letoga passing to #2 Prince Coleman for the reception touchdown; the 2 point conversion was good with a pass from #1 Dylan Letoga to #11 Jacob Kerin. Score 28-38

  • The 3rd quarter finished with the Monash Warriors on their 25.

 

4th Quarter - 50-28 (0-12)

  • Monash Warriors scored a running touchdown from a broken play; the 2 point conversion was unsuccessful.  Score 28-44

  • MUGC Royals punted the ball back after not being able to gain a 1st down; Monash Warriors took the ball down the field and scored a rushing touchdown, however were unable to convert the 2 points.  Score 28-50

  • MUGC Royals and Monash Warriors completed the game with one possession each without any further score.

 

Unfortunately the MUGC Royals fell short with a spirited 28-50 loss.  Game highlights will be posted on www.mugc.com.au and under MUGC TV along with interviews.
